The New Zealand Federation of Bird Clubs was formed in 1932 and is currently based in Christchurch. It serves as an umbrella organisation for more than thirty bird clubs throughout New Zealand, representing a combined membership of over 1,100 enthusiasts.
Many of these clubs have been established for decades, with several operating for 70–90 years, and the oldest club having been founded more than 120 years ago. The federation also includes thirteen specialist bodies that focus on particular species and varieties of birds.
