Chapter 1

Foundations

“To understand a bird, you must first understand where it came from.”

Every breeder starts somewhere — usually with a single bird and a lot of curiosity. But the birds themselves have a far longer story. Before cages, shows, and colour standards, there were small green finches living wild on the windswept edges of the Atlantic, especially the rugged landscapes of the Canary Islands. This section is about grounding yourself in that origin story.

Here, we explore how wild birds became domestic companions, how early breeders shaped the first lines, and how centuries of selection gave us the incredible diversity we see today. Understanding this history isn’t just interesting — it changes how you think as a breeder. You start seeing traits as inherited legacies rather than random outcomes.

Once you understand the roots, the next step is learning how those roots branched into the many forms of canaries we have today.
